Janice Moore Obituary

Janice Rose Moore, age 89 of Philo, IL., passed peacefully in her home on July 17, 2025 surrounded by her loving family.

Janice was born June 27, 1936 in Dana, Indiana to parents Henry and Grace Helt. She was one of six children. The Helt’s raised Janice and her siblings on their family farm in Martinsville, IL. Janice had fond and vivid memories of her childhood on the farm and her siblings, whom she deeply adored.

Janice graduated from Martinsville High School in 1954. Promptly after graduation, she moved to Paris, IL. where she was employed first at U.O. Colson Company and then at Consumers Feed and Supply. It was here that Janice met Leo Franklin Moore whom she married on June 8, 1956. They were blessed with two beautiful daughters; Debra born in 1959 and Sharon in 1964. Frank and Janice celebrated 69 years of marriage.

In the early 1960’s, the Moore’s relocated from Paris, IL. to Champaign County – eventually settling in Philo, IL. It was this move that, in time, allowed Frank and Janice to establish their own family farm. While helping Frank with the farming operation and raising two children, Janice also worked full time. For over two decades, her expert book-keeping skills gained her employment first at Utility Credit Union, then at Champaign County Grain Elevator in Philo and eventually at American Maze Products in Urbana, IL from which she retired in 1986.

When she was not at work, Janice could be found with her children, hauling grain to the elevator, making field meals, managing the books for their family farm, volunteering to help others, or participating in church functions. Janice was an active and devoted member of the Philo Presbyterian Church for over fifty years, serving in a variety of committee and leadership positions.

Janice had a vibrant, joyful personality; she was a kind and welcoming soul. Describing her as a social butterfly would be most accurate, as she loved to see family and friends and spend time out and about in her community. Janice loved any reason to celebrate and never missed a party! She was salt of the Earth, comprised of grit, loyalty, optimism and love. Her life was full; she was deeply loved and will be dearly missed.

Janice was proceeded in death by her parents and siblings, Darlene Reel, Mervin Helt, and Mary Jane Slater.

She is survived by her husband Frank Moore of Philo, IL., daughters Debra (Jerry) Heinz of Sadorus, IL., Sharon (Todd) Herbert of Philo, IL.; grandchildren Andrew Heinz of Sadorus, IL., Allison (Clayton) Coulter of Tolono, IL., Nolan (Meg) Herbert of Philo, IL., Madison Herbert of Champaign, IL.; and great-grandchildren Jackson Heinz, Emerson and Gracyn Coulter, Emmie and Nora Herbert. Also surviving, are her brother Phillip (Kaye) Helt of Decatur, IL., sister Eva (Bryce) Drake of Dallas, GA and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation in Janice’s honor will be held on Tuesday, July 22, 2025 at 10 AM at the Philo Presbyterian Church with funeral services following at 11AM. A burial ceremony will take place at the Locust Grove Cemetery in Philo, IL.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Janice’s honor to the University of Illinois’ “Cancer Center at Illinois” or the Philo Presbyterian Church.
