Butch grew up in rural Sadorus where he was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. He attended Unity High School where he excelled in basketball, ran cross country and pole-vaulted in track. He retired from Illinois Bell/AT&T as a systems technician and continued to do telephone work for several years following retirement.

Butch was well known as a master fast-pitch softball pitcher with a drop ball that fooled many batters. He threw several perfect games and no-hitters in his pitching career that spanned over 40 years. He was inducted into the ASA Hall of Fame three times; as an individual; with his 1985 Illinois State Champion, Sadorus Woodworth Truckers; and with his Nohren Farms Master’s team. In addition to the state title won in 1985, he was named most valuable pitcher that year and his Urbana Merchants team won a state title in 1967.

Butch was a long-time bowler and the highlight was a perfect game he bowled at Unity Lanes in Tolono. He also played church league basketball with his 3 younger brothers for several years.
