Donald Lee Happ, Sr., 91, passed away at 6:29 a.m. Wednesday (December 10)
at his home in Philo. Donald was born on June 22, 1934, the son of Anton and
Alice (Stenger) Happ in rural Pesotum. He married Dorothy (Bosch) Happ on
August 6, 1960 at Immaculate Conception Church in Bongard. She survives.
Donald is also survived by his children, Donald Jr. (Debra) Happ of Homer,
Douglas (Anne) Happ of Paris, Darla Coulter of Philo, David (Lisa) Happ of
Philo, Dennis (Lois) Happ of Philo and daughter-in-law Terry Happ of Urbana;
his sister Eileen (David) DeMoss and brother Dennie (Julia) Happ; 14
grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and
Godchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Danny Happ,
great-grandchildren Daniel Ennis and Braelynn Kosik, and brother Gene
Happ. After his graduation from Longview High School, Donald served in the
United States Air Force. He was a proud member of the American Legion Post
#1171, the Knights of Columbus, and the I & I Antique Tractor Club. Don had
a long career working for Western Electric phone company, where he met
many life-long friends. After his retirement, he started a second career,
creating woodworking crafts and toys. Don served time on the Village of
Philo Zoning Board and as a Philo Township Trustee. Don was fiercely proud
of all of his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids and took every opportunity
that he could to share stories of their accomplishments. One of his greatest
joys was working with his “Bosch Brothers” on home improvement projects
within the extended family. Don was a pioneer member of the Philo golf cart
community and could often be seen driving his grandkids around town. He
was a strong supporter of St. Thomas School in Philo, spending years as its
athletic director. Donations can be made to St. Thomas School in Don’s
honor. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 16 from 4-6 at St.
Thomas Catholic Church in Philo. A rosary will precede the visitation at 3:30.
A funeral service will be held at St. Thomas Catholic Church on Wednesday,
December 17, at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Keith Walder will be officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Philo. Military rites will be accorded.
