Betty Peters Obituary

Betty Louise Peters reached the end of her wonderful life on October 1st, 2024 at the age 88. She was born on Sept. 26, 1936 to John and Evelyn Bukowski.

She was born in Hammond, Indiana, where after graduating high school, followed her fiancé, Dick Peters to Oakland, California, where he was stationed in the Navy. She wed Dick Peters on November 23 of 1954. After being discharged from the Navy, Dick and Betty moved to Homer, Illinois, where they raised their 3 children. Betty worked alongside Dick with several businesses in Homer, including the Shell Station and the Kustard Kup. Betty began her career working in the University of Illinois Foundation office until her retirement in 1991.

After retirement, Betty spent much of her time having the 3 grandchildren who lived close by over for visits. They spent a lot time riding their bikes to the Homer Library, renting videos from the Homer IGA , and eating Grandma’s famous French Toast. We all know that if there were a kitchen in Heaven, mom would be right there cooking up a hot batch of French toast!

Betty loved traveling with her friends, eating jelly belly jelly beans, shopping for a great deal on the QVC network, and attempting to golf. Most of all she cherished her family deeply.

She is survived by her 3 children: Randy(Nancy) Peters of Bangor, ME, Lynn Peters of Monticello, IL, and Ron(Salena) of Saint Joseph, IL. She leaves behind her 7 grandchildren: Lindsey Peters, Dana(Dan) Arney, Nicole(Ian) Stanberry, Chris(Mackenzie), Katie Peters, Laura(Andrew) Van Meerbeke, and David Peters. She also had 13 great grandchildren: Scarlet, Sydney, Savannah, Irelyn, Jocelyn, Milyn, Conner, Maggie, Ella, Chase, Gracie, Riley, and Elijah. She is also survived by 2 brothers: Larry Whitely of TN and Billy Whitely of IN. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Jeannie, and her husband Dick Peters.

The family would also like to acknowledge the Monticello Rescue Squad and Carl Hospice. A very special thanks to Desiree and Jennifer who took care of Mom right up to the end.

Service are set for Saturday, October12, at Freese Funeral Home, 32 E. Grand Ave. in St. Joseph, IL. Visitation is from 10 to 11 AM with the Celebration service at 11 led by Ramie Gordon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Carle Hospice of Urbana, IL.
