Alfred “Al” was born October 16, 1928, in Douglas County, Illinois to Henry and Nell Karcher. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Margaret Roellig, brother Paul Karcher, and son-in-law David VanUithoven.
Al was a Sergeant in the United States Army serving during the Korean conflict from 1950 to 1952. While stationed in Okinawa, Japan, he wrote and proposed to Evelyn Messman. The two were married on September 19, 1954, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Sadorus.
Surviving are his loving wife of 69 years, Evelyn Messman Karcher and children Vicki VanUithoven of Sadorus, Tim (Mary) Karcher of Bettendorf Iowa, and Lisa (Pat) Flavin of St. Louis Missouri; nine grandchildren, Kristen (Chad) Owen of Janesville, Wisconsin, Tory (Ryan) Bennett of Hopedale, Illinois, Matthew Karcher of Detroit, Michigan, Ryan Karcher of Davenport, Iowa, Kate Gardner of Bettendorf, Iowa, Liz Gardner of Davenport, Iowa, Connor Flavin of Chicago, Illinois, Jack Flavin of St. Louis, Missouri, and Luke Flavin of St. Louis Missouri; and a future great-grandchild expected in January.
Al’s life revolved around his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events and activities. He was a coach to his children’s softball teams for many years and spent countless hours on bleachers cheering and supporting his children and grandchildren.
Al was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sadorus where he served as President, Treasurer, Secretary and Elder. He also served as Sunday School Superintendent, taught the high school Sunday school class, and was a long-time member of the church choir.
Al was an auto mechanic at the Buick dealership in Champaign, Illinois and later operated his own auto mechanic business in Sadorus. He also taught an Urbana adult education class entitled “Madame Mechanic”.
He enjoyed playing cards with friends and was a member of the Tolono Area Euchre Card Club where he was one of two members to win all games in one evening during the many years of the club’s existence.
Al was best known for being a lifelong St. Louis Cardinal fan. He saw 10 Cardinal World Series championships in his lifetime, while his Cub fan friends saw only 1 (he asked us to include this with a wink and a smile).
Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Sadorus, Illinois.
